Genshiken summary: As the freshman year of college kicks off, Kanji Sasahara finds himself struggling with a decision. Will he take the leap and fulfill his life-long dream of becoming a member of an otaku club? Meanwhile, Saki Kasukabe is grappling with a different problem altogether. Can she de-otaku-fy her boyfriend Kousaka and transform him into a normal person? Kanji eventually musters up the courage to join Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, and in a surprising turn of events, Kousaka decides to tag along. While Kanji flourishes in his new setting, Saki attempts to coax Kousaka into renouncing his love for anime by accompanying him to various activities of the club. Together, they participate in costume-playing, comic conventions, video gaming, and collecting anime figures, thus allowing Saki to gain an appalling insight into the world of Japanese fandom.
